  • Workshop Request Procedure (Please Read First)
     ECELS arranges on-site health and safety workshops for early education and child care providers in Pennsylvania. Workshops can be subsidized if funding is available, or arranged on a fee-for-service basis. To learn more about the procedure and which topics the state has approved to meet the STAR Level 2 Performance Standard for Health and Safety, click on the title above this text. To view an updated list of all the individual workshops that are available, click here or scroll down the list of topics below.  If a workshop on a health or safety topic is desired that is not specifically listed, ask ECELS to arrange for a workshop provided by a health professional who is an expert on this topic.   • WKSHP-Active Play (Safe Active Play)
     Highlights 12 most common active play hazards. Emphasizes the use of certified playground inspectors, facility checklists and injury reports to identify and remove significant hazards, and teaches how to maintain safe play areas.   • WKSHP-Asthma
    Interactive discussion, visual aids and hands-on demonstrations to address the causes, symptoms, bodily responses, and current prevention and management for asthma episodes. (ECERS-ITERS: Program Structure, Personal Care Routines. K7C2-84; 2 hours credit; meets STAR Level 2 Performance Standard for Health and Safety)
  • WKSHP-Caring For Our Children
    Five separate two hour interactive workshops are available individually or as a series.  The workshops highlight Caring for Our Children: National Health and Safety Standards. Content from the Caring for Our Children Video Series is used. Select from among the following topics:

  • WKSHP-Caring for the Caregiver
     Teaches early learning practitioners how to recognize and manage occupational health risks addressed in Caring for Our Children: the National Health and Safety Standards. Addresses management of stress, infectious disease risks and musculo-skeletal (ergonomic) challenges intrinsic to providing child care. Includes assessment of personal and worksite health promotion strategies. - Workshop content revised in 2008. (ECERS-ITERS: Parents and Staff. K7C1-84; 2 hours credit. Meets STAR Level 2 Preformance Standard for Health and Safety)
  • WKSHP-Child Abuse and Neglect

     Early learning practitioners are mandated to report suspected child abuse and neglect. Learn about prevention efforts, recognize signs and symptoms of child abuse and neglect and reporting requirements for mandated reporters.  Develop/review your policy regarding child abuse and neglect.  This professional development opportunity is available in either the workshop or a self-learning module format.  Click on and complete the Request Training Event form in the left pane of this page. The training fee is due when ECELS staff confirm that the training can be arranged. Check to see if the Regional Key will pay for the training with state training funds.   • WKSHP-Common Illnesses in Child Care
     This workshop uses a game approach to teach appropriate response to common illnesses. Addresses myths and facts about childhood ilnesses. Includes distribution of current reference materials and the opportunity to practice using them. Draws on information in the 2008 edition of the American Academy of Pediatrics publication Managing Infectious Diseases in Child Care and Schools, a Quick Reference Guide. (ECERS-ITERS: Personal Care Routines, Parents and Staff. K7C2-84: 2 hours credit. Meets STAR Level 2 Performance Standard for Health and Safety)
  • WKSHP-Food Allergy
     Uses the interactive curriculum from the Food Allergy Network. Includes a video and mock epinephrine (EpiPen) demonstration to teach the basics of food allergy and allergen types in foods. Includes a discussion of how to modify the child care setting for a child with a food allergy, and a plan for handling a food allergy response. Workshop was revised in 2008.   • WKSHP-Inclusion of Children with Special Health Care Needs
    Uses interactive discussion of real-life examples presented in a video segment to help early learning practitioners identify and suggest ways to overcome barriers to enrollment and competent care for children with special needs. Includes key strategies for inclusion, tips to assess the capability of the program and how to identify and use community resources. (ECERS-ITERS: Program Structure, Personal Care Routines. K7C2-84; 2-4 hours credit.  Meets STAR Level 2 Performance Standard for Health and Safety)
  • WKSHP-Infant and Toddler Health and Safety
    Learn how to assess health and safety practices in programs for infants and toddlers in conjunction with use of the ITERS assessment tool. Use the assessment to make improvements in the program. (ITERS. K7C2-84; 2-4 hours credit.  Meets STAR Level 2 Performance Standard for Health and Safety)
  • WKSHP-Keeping Safe While Touching Blood or Other Body Fluids
    This workshop highlights special practices needed to protect staff and children from contact with blood or other potentially infectious body fluids. Learn how to minimize your risk of exposure to disease causing pathogens (germs, viruses, etc.) Learn how to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements. Explore your facility's policies and Exposure Control Plan. Discuss how to handle a biting incident. (ECERS-ITERS: Personal Care Routines, Parents and Staff. K7 C2-84; 2 hours credit.  Meets STAR Level 2 Performance Standard for Health and Safety)
  • WKSHP-Medication (Safe Medication Administration)
     This workshop draws on the curriculum published in 2010 by the American Academy of Pediatrics to learn skills and discuss scenarios to identify gaps in practice related to medication policies and procedures. Receive practical tips on safe oral medication administration and approriate documentation. Meets caregiver training requirements in Caring for Our Children: National Health and Safety Performance Standards and NAEYC accreditation standards. For an additional hour of credit, participants who successfully complete the Medication Administration Workshop may arrange for a licensed health professional to observe their performance of medication administration skills using a checklist provided by ECELS.  To receive this extra hour of credit, early learning practitioners should send the following items to ECELS: 1) a copy of the certificate of successful completion of the Medication Administration Workshop, 2) the successfully competed Medication Administration Skills Checklist, signed and dated by the health professional who completed the form attesting to the satisfactory performance of the skills, 3) a completed Registration Form - the same one used for self-learning modules, and 4) a check for the $10 processing fee, made payable to the PA Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.(ECERS-ITERS: Personal Care Routines. K7C2-84; hours of credit based on length of workshop between 2-4 hours with an additional hour available to those who arrange for the health professional observation skills check.
