    For a comprehensive list of AV materials recommended and/or available from ECELS, click on "A-V Lending Library" in the left pane of this page. PA child care providers and health consultants may borrow the videos for a period of 7-10 business days.  To request a video from the A-V Lending Library, click the link to an on-line order form in the description of each video.   • Health and Safety Consultation in Child Care - DVD Multimedia Training   [Available for Order]
    A new Self Study Module is Now Available for Health Professionals and Program Directors - Health & Safety Consultation in Child Care is available to health professionals and early education/child care program directors for 3 hours of  CME or 0.3 CEU credits from the U of Pittsburgh.  The interactive, multi-media  2 DVD set includes a self-learning module based on the 5-part video/DVD series. The DVD set has the videos as well as electronic copies of many helpful forms and documents.  These include the full text of Caring for Our Children,-The National Health and Safety Performance Standards,  Model Child Care Health Policies and 12 other helpful documents. The DVD set  Health & Safety Consultation in Child Care is free to PA health professionals and early education directors. (In PA, conventional videotapes of the video material on the DVD set may be borrowed from ECELS.) PA health professionals and early education directors should click on "Available for Order" and complete the form that opens. Non-Pennsylvania health professionals and early education directors may purchase the DVD or conventional video set for $99 prepaid, including postage and handling. To purchase one or more sets, follow the instructions on the flyer that appears when you click on the Title above. To view the work required for the self-learning module, click on Publicatons/Media and select Self-Learning Modules.     ECELS offers brief articles to insert into parent and staff newsletters, post on bulletin boards or otherwise share information on health and safety topics. Click on the section photo and heading on this website called “Publications and Media” and then, in that section, scroll down the page to the subsection heading “Health Capsule” for all these brief articles.  Whenever ECELS publishes a new Health Capsule, the editor sends an E-Mail Alert from ECELS to everyone who signed up on the ECELS home page for these alerts.

    ECELS publishes the newsletter, Health Link Online to inform early education and health professionals about health and safety issues. The first issues were two pages and issued every month. Now the issues are usually six pages, and issued quarterly. Feel free to make copies to spread the news. Note: whenever ECELS publishes a new issue of Health Link Online, the editor sends an E-Mail Alert from ECELS to everyone who signed up on the ECELS home page for these alerts.

  • Managing Chronic Health Needs in Child Care and Schools
    Many children who are enrolled in early education and child care programs have chronic health problems or special health needs.  In the United States, 14% of all children have such conditions. The American Academy of Pediatrics published this Quick Reference Guide to help teachers and caregivers understand these conditions and work with health care professionals to be sure children who have them stay well. The book explains how to develop specific Care Plans for educational settings. One section offers information about types of health professionals who might be involved in a child's care. Half the book is devoted to condition-specific Quick Reference Sheets and sample forms.   To order this book, go to www.aap.org.
  • Managing Infectious Diseases in Child Care and Schools, A Quick Reference Guide
     Many licensed child care centers received a free copy of the first edition of Managing Infectious Diseases in Child Care and Schools, A Quick Reference Guide. ECELS offered free copies upon request to family child care providers as well. The 2009, second editon of this handy reference can be purchased from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the national organization of pediatricians and other pediatric health professionals. Look for the purple cover and spiral binding of this award-winning book.  The second ediition has more Quick Reference Sheets on illnesses that children may experience than the first edition. It also has the newer recommendations about when children with conjunctivitis and diarrhea need to be excluded or can remain in the program. Updated 3/25/10
  • Vaccines and Your Baby   [Available for Order]
    “Vaccines and Your Baby” is a 28-minute video that explains the basics of vaccines. You’ll learn about vaccines and how they work, the science behind vaccines, immunity, and the 11 diseases that vaccines prevent. Parents of children who suffered vaccine-preventable diseases tell their stories. You may watch the video on line. Go to www.vaccine.chop.edu. To watch the video, just click on any section you wish to view. To watch the video from beginning to end, click on the first section and follow the prompts to each section that follows. If you prefer, you can download the entire video to your computer link on the webpage of the Vaccine Information Center.  Pennsylvania child care practitioners may order a free VHS copy of this video from ECELS to show to parents by clicking on "Available for Order" above and completing the request form.
