  • Active Play - Environmental Rating Scale Items
    This document prepared by Michelle Bossers, M.Ed - (Project Manager Keystone STARS Environmental Rating Scale Assessment) references the standards and describes the current measurement of compliance with national recommendations for safe, active play areas in the Keystone STARS program. The material was presented during an ECELS "Let's Talk" audioconference on Safe Active Play in August 2004. Note - for more information about Safe Active Play, see the ECELS self-learning module (SLM - Safe Active Play) listed in the Self-Learning Modules subsection of this Section.
  • Active Play Areas Safety Checklist (Brief)
    Elizabeth Hope Caesar developed this checklist for a Let's Talk audioconference held in September 2004. The checklist is based on the recommendations of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and the American Society for Testing and Materials Standards.  Ms. Caesar is an early education provider and an instructor for Certified Playground  Safety Inspectors.  Use this checklist to evaluate the safety of your playground.

  • Center for the Social and Emotional Foundation for Early Learning
    The Center began as a collaborative of experts in socio-emotional health that was jointly funded by Head Start and the Child Care Bureau when it was located at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.   Now headed by Dr. Mary Louise Hemmeter, the Center has moved to Vanderbilt University.  It offers a wealth of material on its website. The Briefs are summaries of effective practices to support children's social-emotional development and prevent challenging behaviors. Each Brief describes practical strategies, provides references to more information about the practice, and includes a one-page handout that highlights the major points in the brief. Each is available in English and Spanish. The website includes training modules, videos and is the home of the national pyramid model for states to enhance socio-emotional competent caregiving.     This is a list of published documents and audio-visual materials available from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association for the Education of Young Children that health consultants and directors might want in their professional libraries. It includes the national Poison Control phone number.
  • Clean Intermittent Catheterization in Child Care
    Description of clean, intermittent catheterization for a child in child care who is unable to store or empty their bladder in the usual way.
  • Crib Safety in Child Care Programs
    Brochure prepared by ECELS-Healthy Child Care PA with the PA Department of Health describing appropriate use of cribs in early education and child care programs.
