  • Active Play - Environmental Rating Scale Items
    This document prepared by Michelle Bossers, M.Ed - (Project Manager Keystone STARS Environmental Rating Scale Assessment) references the standards and describes the current measurement of compliance with national recommendations for safe, active play areas in the Keystone STARS program. The material was presented during an ECELS "Let's Talk" audioconference on Safe Active Play in August 2004.   • Active Play Areas Safety Checklist (Brief)
    Elizabeth Hope Caesar developed this checklist for a Let's Talk audioconference held in September 2004. The checklist is based on the recommendations of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and the American Society for Testing and Materials Standards.  Ms. Caesar is an early education provider and an instructor for Certified Playground  Safety Inspectors.  Use this checklist to evaluate the safety of your playground.

    Use the recommended recipes to dilute household bleach for sanitizing and disinfecting surfaces in early education and child care facilities. This illustration comes from Figure 2.8 in the newest (5th) edition of Healthy Young Chlldren, a manual published by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. 
  • Bronchiolitis
    General information for parents and caregivers about bronchiolitis in young infants and children.
  • Center for the Social and Emotional Foundation for Early Learning
    The Center began as a collaborative of experts in socio-emotional health that was jointly funded by Head Start and the Child Care Bureau when it was located at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.   Now headed by Dr. Mary Louise Hemmeter, the Center has moved to Vanderbilt University.  It offers a wealth of material on its website. The Briefs are summaries of effective practices to support children's social-emotional development and prevent challenging behaviors. Each Brief describes practical strategies, provides references to more information about the practice, and includes a one-page handout that highlights the major points in the brief. Each is available in English and Spanish. The website includes training modules, videos and is the home of the national pyramid model for states to enhance socio-emotional competent caregiving.   • Changing Soiled Underwear
    When children have toileting accidents in child care, staff must follow procedures that are appropriate for the child and limit the spread of germs.  This fact sheet gives the rationale and the procedure for these situations. Updated 11/2012
  • Child Abuse and Neglect: Supporting Those Involved with Child Maltreatment

  • Child Care Health and Safety National Resources
    This is a list of published documents and audio-visual materials available from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association for the Education of Young Children that health consultants and directors might want in their professional libraries. It includes the national Poison Control phone number.
  • Choking Hazards

    A collection of ECELS Fact Sheets. Fact Sheets are succinct information sheets for early education/child care staff on certain medical conditions, special needs, and an overview of infectious diseases.  For newly updated fact sheets on specific infectious diseases, see Managing Infectious Diseases in Child Care and Schools, a Quick Reference Guide, 2nd edition (2009). For newly updated fact sheets on specific types of special needs, see Managing Chronic Health Needs in Child Care and Schools (2010).     A brochure that describes how to find a child care health consultant to provide technical assistance and instruction on health and safety for staff and families. The text of the brochure also addresses how to assess the knowledge, skills, and work of health professionals who provide health and safety consultation and professional development for early childhood programs.   • Injury Prevention
    Steps to prevent injury in child care facilities.  The approach is useful for all types of facilities, but will be especially helpful to providers who want to meet the PA STARS standards. The recommendations were published in the March 2006 issue of Health Link Online. In this article, you will find active links to checklists that staff, parents and older children can use to hunt for and correct hazards and risky practices.
  • Obesity Prevention Resources for Early Education and Child Care
    This updated list of links and resources has links to specific information about nutrition, food safety and physical activity relevant to early education and child care programs.  Many of the websites offer detailed suggestions for menu planning and age-appropriate moderate to strenuous exercise. This list was updated for the Let's Talk telephone conference on The New Caring for Our Children Standards to Reduce Risk of Obesity for Young Children presented on 12/1/2010. The other handouts for the telephone conference are in the section headed "Publications and Media" under the subsection "Let's Talk ..."

  • Pennsylvania Immunization Card   [Available for Order]

    The PA (Pennsylvania) Immunization Card is an English/Spanish wallet-sized personal immunization record for children and adults. It is available in quantity at no cost for distribution in Pennsylvania to help families keep track of vaccines they have received.  To order the PA Immunization Card, click on the phrase "Available for Order" above this paragraph and complete the form. The form comes in packs of 50.   • Vaccine Names and their Components
    Vaccine products for children may contain single vaccines (protection against a single disease, e.g. Hepatitis b) or multiple vaccines (protection against multiple diseases, e.g. MMR for measles, mumps, rubella). These multiple vaccines are often called "combo or combination vaccines". Different vaccine manufacturers may produce either single or combo vaccines.   • Whooping Cough
