  • Self-Learning Modules: To Order Materials and Obtain Professional Development Credit
     ECELS offers self-learning modules for use and review for credit by ECELS-Healthy Child Care PA staff to Pennsylvania early learning and child care practitioners. Beginning July 1, 2010, ECELS requires a $10 per person co-pay for review of completed self-learning modules.  Payment is by check, payable to the PA Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. ECELS encourages use of online materials on this website by anyone who wants to improve care for children. The self-learning modules are available in the following formats: 1) Online learning materials 2) Online learning materials combined with hard-copy print and/or audiovisual materials and 3) hard-copy print materials only. Each self-learning module offers state-authorized Professional Development credit. Read the descriptions on this web page to learn about each self-learning module.Note many of the modules are approved to meet the STAR Level 2 Performance Standard for Health and Safety. Some require materials you must obtain from ECELS and some include A-V materials from ECELS that you can keep to use over and over again.     Asthma is one of the most common chronic illnesses of childhood. Learn about asthma and how teachers/caregivers can take care of young children with asthma. Includes easy-to-understand print material on asthma and a link to an on-line video to view. PA child care practitioners may submit a self-assessment for professional development credit.   • SLM Online - Behavior: Managing Challenging Behavior in School-Age Children
    Review examples of school-age children with challenging behavior. Learn about tools recommended to sort out the motives behind such behavior. By understanding these motives, practitioners can give children socially acceptable alternatives to their challenging behavior.   • SLM Online - Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care Center

    By using the information in the module to perform the required activities, you can help give children and their mothers a life-long health benefit! This Self Learning Module is based on an online resource kit developed by the Wisconsin Partnership for Activity and Nutrition. This kit contains two important tools that centers can use to become breastfeeding friendly. To earn Professional Development credit for this module from ECELS, follow these instructions:
    1. Read the Wisconsin publication: “Ten Steps to Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care Centers” Click here to be directed to the publication.
    2. With permission of the authors, ECELS modified the self-appraisal questionnaire and the sample policy in the resource kit. After reading the information in the kit, directors and early learning practitioners from infant-toddler centers should collaborate to make their center breastfeeding friendly. Use the ECELS- modified versions of the self-appraisal questionnaire and policy documents.  Click here or on the title of the self-learning module for the MSWord format of these documents.  When the center has implemented the 10 steps in the resource (tool) kit, those who participated in the work may apply for Professional Development credit.
    3. Each person seeking Professional Development credit must: a) Sign the completed self-appraisal questionnaire for the center indicating participation in the self-appraisal. b) Sign the center’s site-specific breastfeeding policy indicating participation in and agreement to follow the policy. c) Individually complete a Registration Form. ECELS will evaluate the completed self-appraisal questionnaire and policy to see how well these documents demonstrate understanding and implementation of the 10 steps described in the resource kit.  Submit the completed documents, including Registration Forms and a check for the $10 per person fee for ECELS staff to review the work done on this module to ECELS by surface mail to the address of the ECELS office found on this website.     Early learning practitioners are mandated to report suspected child abuse and neglect.  Learn about changes to the Child Protective Services Law (CPSL), prevention efforts, recognizing signs and symptoms of child abuse and neglect, and reporting requirements for mandated reporters.  Develop/review your policy regarding child abuse and neglect.  Includes audiovisual materials sent separately.   Click on the title of this self-learning module for the on-line activities. Complete and submit the forms in the on-line material for review to ECELS.   • SLM Online - Emergency Plan Self-Learning Module
    For Directors/Administrators: The ECELS website includes many forms and suggestions from experts that help child care providers write "best practice" emergency plans. For a list of these resources on the ECELS website, put "emergency preparedness" in the search box at the top of the page. In addition, you may want to use the 114 page guide and fill-in-the-blank forms that are available on the website of the National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies in their publication, Nationwide Child Care Planning Initiative - Is Child Care Ready?  To receive 2 hours of Professional Development credit for successful completion of the ECELS Emergency Plan Self-Learning Module, submit a copy of the facility's Emergency Plan that includes all the items in the Emergency Plan Checklist , a completed Registration Form and the $10 per person for for each module that ECELS staff will review for professional development credit.     Learn about common environmental health risks for children including lead, pesticides, air pollution, and drinking water pollution.  This module uses the California Child Care Health Program Environmental Health Module.  Includes strategies to address environmental health risks in early learning programs, information for families, and other resources. Complete the module and submit it with the Registration Form and a check for the $10 per person fee for ECELS review of the work  for professional development credit.   • SLM Online - Fitness and Nutrition: Moving and Munching-Supporting Physical Activity and Nutrition in Early Learning Programs   [Available for Order]

    Assess your program’s physical activity and nutrition policies and practices for children ages 3-5 using the Nutrition and Physical Activity Self- Assessment for Child Care (NAP SACC).  Based on the assessment, develop an action plan to make improvements.  Learn how to create a nutritious menu and evaluate the menu according to Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) guidelines.   • SLM Online - Food Allergy   [Available for Order]

    Using the Food Allergy Network's training and program improvement kit, staff and children can learn about food allergies. The tasks include viewing two videos; one for staff and one for children, and then submitting an activity that involves reading food labels and a self-assessment. PA practitioners may click on the title of the self-learning module for the instructions and the on-line portion of this module. Note that the file is large and with a high speed (e.g. cable) connection, it will take 3-4 minutes to download the file. ECELS will mail the videos and kit to you separately.   • SLM Online - Health Records: Easing the Burden of Managing Child Health Records   [Available for Order]
    This online professional development opportunity is for directors and administrative staff who are new users (subscribers) of WellCareTrackerTM Internet application software, available from ECELS. The professional development experience involves working with user-friendly technology in your program to identify and track gaps in required preventive health services. The software produces the data needed to provide documentation of up-to-date status of enrolled children and the immunization dose counts that must be reported each January to the PA Department of Health.
