    ECELS-Healthy Child Care PA has initiated “E-mail Alerts” from ECELS to inform staff in early learning and school-age programs as well as health professionals about “breaking news in health & safety in child care” and for distribution of other news, newsletters, and information relevant to early learning and school-age programs. ECELS will send E-mail Alerts from ECELS on a regular and periodic basis (approximately 1-2 times/month) when we post updates to our website, and use E-mail Alerts from ECELS to inform those professionals who wish to be notified.   • Child Care Health Advocate Course
    Northampton Community College offers a 3 credit Child Care Health Advocate Course that is available either On-Campus or Online.   A Child Care Health Advocate is a designated staff member who makes sure that best practice in health, safety, and nutrition are integrated into program policies and procedures while carrying out the usual duties of a director, lead teacher or similar role.  A Child Care Health Advocate coordinates a program's operations with external sources of health expertise such as a Child Care Health Consultant and other health professionals who provide technical assistance and education.     U.S. health officials say that even more flu vaccine is available for the 2010-11 season than last year. Widespread use of flu vaccine helps reduce the spread of influenza in groups and from group settings to the community. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wants as many adults and children as possible to get vaccinated. 9/1/2010

    A new report about the management of head lice in K-12 schools raised questions about how to handle situations when a child has lice a child care setting.   • Health Capsule-Obesity Prevention

    Obesity is epidemic in the United States. Preventing obesity starts in early childhood. Learning life skills for physical activity and nutrition are key. ECELS has an online self-learning module to teach users to assess their program’s physical activity and nutrition practices and polices for 3 to 5 year old children. The module includes a self-assessment and development of an action plan for program improvement as well as many other resources.     Many organizations provide useful suggestions to help children and families who have experienced a disaster. Both immediate and long-term assistance may be needed.
