- Workshop Request Procedure (Please Read First)
 ECELS arranges on-site health and safety workshops for early education and child care providers in Pennsylvania. Workshops can be subsidized if funding is available, or arranged on a fee-for-service basis. To learn more about the procedure and which topics the state has approved to meet the STAR Level 2 Performance Standard for Health and Safety, click on the title above this text. If a workshop on a health or safety topic is desired that is not specifically listed, ask ECELS to arrange for a workshop provided by a health professional who is an expert on this topic. Highlights 12 most common active play hazards. Emphasizes the use of certified playground inspectors, facility checklists and injury reports to identify and remove significant hazards, and teaches how to maintain safe play areas. Interactive discussion, visual aids and hands-on demonstrations to address the causes, symptoms, bodily responses, and current prevention and management for asthma episodes. This workshop highlights special practices needed to protect staff and children from contact with blood or other potentially infectious body fluids. Learn how to minimize your risk of exposure to disease causing pathogens (germs, viruses, etc.) Learn how to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements. Teaches early learning practitioners how to recognize and manage occupational health risks addressed in Caring for Our Children: the National Health and Safety Standards. Addresses management of stress, infectious disease risks and musculo-skeletal (ergonomic) challenges intrinsic to providing child care. Early learning practitioners are mandated to report suspected child abuse and neglect. Learn about prevention efforts, recognize signs and symptoms of child abuse and neglect and reporting requirements for mandated reporters. Develop/review your policy regarding child abuse and neglect. This professional development opportunity is available in either the workshop or a self-learning module format. Click on and complete the Request Training Event form in the left pane of this page. The training fee is due when ECELS staff confirm that the training can be arranged. This workshop uses a game approach to teach appropriate response to common illnesses. Addresses myths and facts about childhood ilnesses. Includes distribution of current reference materials and the opportunity to practice using them. Draws on information in the 2008 edition of the American Academy of Pediatrics publication Managing Infectious Diseases in Child Care and Schools, a Quick Reference Guide. Uses the interactive curriculum from the Food Allergy Network. Includes a video and mock epinephrine (EpiPen) demonstration to teach the basics of food allergy and allergen types in foods. Includes a discussion of how to modify the child care setting for a child with a food allergy, and a plan for handling a food allergy response. Workshop was revised in 2008. Uses interactive discussion of real-life examples presented in a video segment to help early learning practitioners identify and suggest ways to overcome barriers to enrollment and competent care for children with special needs. Includes key strategies for inclusion, tips to assess the capability of the program and how to identify and use community resources. (ECERS-ITERS: Program Structure, Personal Care Routines. Learn how to assess health and safety practices in programs for infants and toddlers in conjunction with use of the ITERS assessment tool. Use the assessment to make improvements in the program. This workshop draws on the curriculum published in 2010 by the American Academy of Pediatrics to learn skills and discuss scenarios to identify gaps in practice related to medication policies and procedures. Receive practical tips on safe oral medication administration and approriate documentation. Meets caregiver training requirements in Caring for Our Children: National Health and Safety Performance Standards and NAEYC accreditation standards. For an additional hour of credit, participants who successfully complete the Medication Administration Workshop may arrange for a licensed health professional to observe their performance of medication administration skills using a checklist provided by ECELS. To receive this extra hour of credit, early learning practitioners should send the following items to ECELS: 1) a copy of the certificate of successful completion of the Medication Administration Workshop, 2) the successfully competed Medication Administration Skills Checklist, signed and dated by the health professional who completed the form attesting to the satisfactory performance of the skills, 3) a completed Registration Form - the same one used for self-learning modules, and 4) a check for the $10 processing fee, made payable to the PA Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.(ECERS-ITERS: Personal Care Routines. For Center Directors, Administrators and Supervisors: This interactive workshop focuses on meeting NAEYC Accreditation requirements for health and safety. Participants identify accreditation criteria of concern to them. As time permits, the trainer and participants share alternative, least costly and least burdensome ways to achieve compliance with health and safety requirements. Using a multi-media approach, the trainer shows implementation strategies. Handouts highlight NAEYC Accreditation Standards and resources where additional information is available on the rationale and approaches to meet the standards. (K7C2-84; K8C2, C3-98 (2 hours credit. Addresses national and state initiatives to reduce obesity among children in group care. Covers nutritional needs of preschool children, portion sizes, and food and nutrition labeling. Emphasizes how children acquire attitudes about food and activity. Contains information about including nutrition education at mealtimes, snacks, holidays and birthdays.  Interactive workshop introduces early learning practitioners to the 'flu' as an infectious disease. Learn the signs and symptoms of the flu, the ways flu spreads and the difference between seasonal flu that comes around every year and the dreaded pandemic flu that is expected to cause widespread severe disease and many deaths. This workshop addresses ways to decrease the spread of flu viruses and strategies to prepare for a flu pandemic. The content was prepared by the National Training Institute for Child Care Health Consultants at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) under a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Involves interactive first aid instruction using PedFACTs, Pediatric First Aid for Caregivers and Teachers, developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Upon successful completion, participants receive a card from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The workshop content includes management of a blocked airway and one person infant/child CPR with manikin practice. The topics covered meet the national standards for what early learning and child care providers should know about recognition and first response to an injury or pediatric medical emergency in a child care setting. This interactive workshop uses the 2010-2011 curriculum from the American Academy of Pediatrics to teach how infectious diseases spread, how to reduce the risk of infectious diseases in group care, and when to exclude ill children from the program. Handouts include sample forms, reproducible parent information sheets and references for model written policies. Teaches how to check immunization records for children in your care and use the Schedule of AAP Recommendations for Routine Pediatric Health Care to ensure that each child is up-to-date with preventive health services. Learn to make appropriate accommodations for children with special health concerns. Learn how to obrtain health information that your program needs from health professionals. Teaches the latest information on reducing the risk of SIDS and how to implement safe sleep practices for infants in child care. Includes how to handle parent and staff who have out-of-date preferences for risky sleep practices. Includes best practice to meet PA Child Care Facility regulations.
