PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
  • Child Care Health Advocate Course
Northampton Community College offers a 3 credit Child Care Health Advocate Course that is available either On-Campus or Online.   A Child Care Health Advocate is a designated staff member who makes sure that best practice in health, safety, and nutrition are integrated into program policies and procedures while carrying out the usual duties of a director, lead teacher or similar role.  A Child Care Health Advocate coordinates a program's operations with external sources of health expertise such as a Child Care Health Consultant and other health professionals who provide technical assistance and education. For more information or to register for the next course offering, call 610-332-6585 or e-mail che@notrhampton.edu.
  • Two Types of Professional Development Available from ECELS
Pennsylvania Early Education and Child Care Practitioners may use either or both of two types of professional development that ECELS-Healthy Child Care PA offers: Self-Learning Modules or Workshops. For an updated list of all offerings, scroll down to review the list of self-learning modules and workshops. ECELS awards state-authorized professional development credit for successful completion of either type.  Click on the title above, "Two Types of Professional Development Available" for specific information about the topics of the Self-Learning Modules and Workshops and the credit available for each. Look for notations on many of the offerings that indicate that these activities meet the Keystone STARS Level 2 Performance Standard for Health and Safety.

Make requests by using the Handy Tools in the left pane of this page.  Some Self-Learning Modules are entirely on-line; others include audio-visual materials that ECELS provides.  All Self-Learning Modules require completion of a  Training Registration Form. For more information contact ECELS by e-mail (ecels@paaap.org) or phone (800-243-2357).

  • Keystone STARS - What is it? How do I find out more information?
The PA Keystone STARS program encourages professional development and provides incentives for Pennsylvania early education and child care programs to improve the quality of their programs.
  • Resources for Emergency Plan Development
ECELS staff prepared a list of resources that early education and child care professionals can use when writing an emergency preparedness plan for a facility.  A best-practice Emergency Plan Checklist suggests items that would otherwise be overlooked. Also, ECELS staff set up a form to use to document radio-TV-scanner contacts to use in an emergency.  To access these tools, just click on the highlighted words in this description. To learn more about how to use your development of a best-practice plan to receive Professional Development credit, click on the title of this description. You can find other tools on this topic on the ECELS website by putting the term "emergency preparedness" into the search box on the upper right corner of the web page.
