    The US Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families website provides comprehensive information on federal programs serviing families: Adoption and Foster Care, Child Abuse and Neglect, Child Care, Child Support, Head Start, TANF and more.
  • American Academy of Pediatrics
    The professional organization of pediatricians, pediatric medical and surgical specialists whose mission is to serve as advocates for children and pediatrics. View standards of child health supervision, including immunizations. Publications about common childhood illnesses, child development, behavior management and other problems may be purchased.The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also offers free handouts with useful tips on seasonally appropriate topics. Feel free to give out this information or include the information in your newsletters as long as you cite the AAP as the source.
  • American Association of Poison Control Centers
    If you have a poisoning emergency, call 800-222-1222 to be connected with your local poison control center. The website of the American Association of Poison Control Centers list addresses and contact information for poison control centers.  You'll also find information on rumors about poisoning risks and games to play with a poison-prevention theme.
  • Center for the Social and Emotional Foundation for Early Learning
    The Center began as a collaborative of experts in socio-emotional health that was jointly funded by Head Start and the Child Care Bureau when it was located at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.   Now headed by Dr. Mary Louise Hemmeter, the Center has moved to Vanderbilt University.  It offers a wealth of material on its website. The Briefs are summaries of effective practices to support children's social-emotional development and prevent challenging behaviors. Each Brief describes practical strategies, provides references to more information about the practice, and includes a one-page handout that highlights the major points in the brief. Each is available in English and Spanish. The website includes training modules, videos and is the home of the national pyramid model for states to enhance socio-emotional competent caregiving.   • Early Head Start National Resource Center

    This website has many useful materials and ideas for early learning practitioners working with infants and toddlers in all types of programs, not just Early Head Start. ECELS especially recommends the tip sheets listed below.   • National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care
    This federally-funded center (NRC) was established by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. It is the home of Caring for Our Children, National Health and Safety Performance Standards: Guidelines for Out-of-Home Child Care.  This key national reference document provides standards, rationale, and evidence for guidelines for out-of-home child care. It is available in print and on the Internet. The NRC is also the home of updated child care regulations for every state, as well as updated information on health and safety in group settings. Questions not found easily on the NRC website can be addressed to NRC staff who can access a network of national experts to respond.
  • Healthy Child Care America
    The national website of Healthy Child Care America. A great source of information about news and "best practices" from state and national early education and care professionals and advocates.
  • Healthy Kids, Healthy Care
    This richly loaded, photo-illustrated WebSite is for parents of children who attend child care programs. It is filled with information, links to posters and other materials that are equally valuable for teachers and other caregivers. The categories of information are Caregivers, Cleanliness, Emotional Health, Healthy Habits, Illness/Chronic Conditions/Special Needs, and Safety. In each category, there are 4-8 topics with tabs for Key Questions, Want to Know More, How to Help Your Caregiver, Additional Resources, and Help to navigate the site.
STATE ORGANIZATIONS  
  • California Child Care Health Program
    This regularly updated website includes health and safety obseration and policy checklists, lesson plans for health professionals to teach health and safety to early education and child care providers, fact sheets, posters and information packets, as well as content-rich newsletters for providers and health consultants.  The Asthma, Oral Health, and Lead Poisoning modules are rich resources. The module on asthma includes a downloadable video that is specific to management of this health problem in child care, as well as posters on triggers and handling asthma emergencies in the group care setting.  The state-specific references to California may not apply elsewhere, but are easy to identify in the materials.
  • Pediatric/Adult Asthma Coalition of New Jersey
    This website includes handy forms and links to other resources for the care of children with asthma.  The "Daily Asthma/Allergy Communication" forms are posted on the website in English and Spanish. These forms help families and child care providers exchange information easily when the child is having symptoms at home or in the program. Other forms on the website help health professionals to communicate their recommendations for the child's care to families and other caregivers.
 
PA CHAPTER - AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS  
  • Health and Safety Quality Improvement Needs

    In January 2007, ECELS/Healthy Child Care PA outlined the key gaps and necessary steps that ECELS recommends to improve the quality of early education and child care in Pennsylvania. This position paper provides data and talking points to guide policy-makers and other stakeholders seeking quality child care in our state.

  • IEP-Immunization Education Program
    The IEP Program provides immunization education to primary care practices and groups of centers, publishes Vaccine Tips twice per year, provides immunization posters and credit card size Health Passport Immunization records to families. IEP also gives audioteleconferences on breaking news in immunization. Click on IEP in the left pane of the page that you view when you click on the Title above.
  • Pennsylvania Immunization Card   [Available for Order]

    The PA (Pennsylvania) Immunization Card is an English/Spanish wallet-sized personal immunization record for children and adults. It is available in quantity at no cost for distribution in Pennsylvania to help families keep track of vaccines they have received.  To order the PA Immunization Card, click on the phrase "Available for Order" above this paragraph and complete the form. The form comes in packs of 50. If you want more than one pack of 50, say how many packs you want sent to you in the comment section of the form.

     

  • Traffic Injury Prevention Program
    TIPP is funded by the PA Department of Transportation. This program of the PA Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics provides comprehensive training and technical assistance to health professionals, early education and child care providers,and others on child passenger safety (car seats, seat belts) pedestrian safety, bicycle safety, school bus safety, and safe driving for teens.   • Keystone STARS - What is it? How do I find out more information?
    The PA Keystone STARS program encourages professional development and provides incentives for Pennsylvania early education and child care programs to improve the quality of their programs.
  • Obesity Prevention Resources for PA Early Education and Child Care
    In October 2005, the Obesity Workgroup of ECELS-Healthy Child Care PA compiled a list of contacts, websites and materials to use to reduce the risk of obesity for children in early education and child care programs.
