  • Child Care Health Advocate Course
    Northampton Community College offers a 3 credit Child Care Health Advocate Course that is available either On-Campus or Online.   A Child Care Health Advocate is a designated staff member who makes sure that best practice in health, safety, and nutrition are integrated into program policies and procedures while carrying out the usual duties of a director, lead teacher or similar role.  A Child Care Health Advocate coordinates a program's operations with external sources of health expertise such as a Child Care Health Consultant and other health professionals who provide technical assistance and education.   • Two Types of Professional Development Available from ECELS
    Pennsylvania Early Education and Child Care Practitioners may use either or both of two types of professional development that ECELS-Healthy Child Care PA offers: Self-Learning Modules or Workshops. For an updated list of all offerings, scroll down to review the list of self-learning modules and workshops. ECELS awards state-authorized professional development credit for successful completion of either type.  Click on the title above, "Two Types of Professional Development Available" for specific information about the topics of the Self-Learning Modules and Workshops and the credit available for each. Look for notations on many of the offerings that indicate that these activities meet the Keystone STARS Level 2 Performance Standard for Health and Safety.

    Make requests by using the Handy Tools in the left pane of this page.  Some Self-Learning Modules are entirely on-line; others include audio-visual materials that ECELS provides.  All Self-Learning Modules require completion of a  Training Registration Form.   • Keystone STARS - What is it? How do I find out more information?
    The PA Keystone STARS program encourages professional development and provides incentives for Pennsylvania early education and child care programs to improve the quality of their programs.
  • Resources for Emergency Plan Development
    ECELS staff prepared a list of resources that early education and child care professionals can use when writing an emergency preparedness plan for a facility.  A best-practice Emergency Plan Checklist suggests items that would otherwise be overlooked. Also, ECELS staff set up a form to use to document radio-TV-scanner contacts to use in an emergency.  To access these tools, just click on the highlighted words in this description. SELF-LEARNING MODULES  
  • Self-Learning Modules: To Order Materials and Obtain Professional Development Credit
     ECELS offers self-learning modules for use and review for credit by ECELS-Healthy Child Care PA staff to Pennsylvania early learning and child care practitioners. Beginning July 1, 2010, ECELS requires a $10 per person co-pay for review of completed self-learning modules.  Payment is by check, payable to the PA Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. ECELS encourages use of online materials on this website by anyone who wants to improve care for children. The self-learning modules are available in the following formats: 1) Online learning materials 2) Online learning materials combined with hard-copy print and/or audiovisual materials and 3) hard-copy print materials only. Each self-learning module offers state-authorized Professional Development credit. Read the descriptions on this web page to learn about each self-learning module.Note many of the modules are approved to meet the STAR Level 2 Performance Standard for Health and Safety. Some require materials you must obtain from ECELS and some include A-V materials from ECELS that you can keep to use over and over again.     Learn how to keep your indoor and outdoor active play areas safe.  Uses Safe Active Play video/DVD and Dirty Dozen online activities to recognize hazards and a checklist based on current CPSC and ASTM guidelines to asses the areas where children play.  Submit completed module with the Registration Form and $10 per person fee for ECELS to review the work for professional development credit.   • SLM Online - Asthma   [Available for Order]
    Asthma is one of the most common chronic illnesses of childhood. Learn about asthma and how teachers/caregivers can take care of young children with asthma. Includes easy-to-understand print material on asthma and a link to an on-line video to view. PA child care practitioners may submit a self-assessment for professional development credit. Click on the title of the self-learning module for the instructions and active links to access all parts of this self-learning module. Alternately, click on "Available For Order" next to the title of the self-learning module or on "Request Self-Learning Modules" on the left pane of this page to order the video for this module, and use the other active links for the Asthma Handbook and the Asthma Self-Learning Module content. Be sure to submit the completed module with a Registration Form and a check for the $10 per person fee required for ECELS to review each module for state-authorized professional development credit.   • SLM - Behavior: Managing Challenging Behaviors in Young Children   [Available for Order]
    View the "Play Nicely" CD and review handouts from national pediatric and early learning experts. The experts discuss common challenging behavior and effective strategies involving staff, parents, and pediatricians. PA providers may click on "Available for Order" next to the title of the self-learning module or "Request Self-Learning Modules" to order hard copy. Submit the completed module with the Registration Form and the $10 per person fee for ECELS to review the module for professional development credit. Instructions updated 2/19/10.      ECELS arranges on-site health and safety workshops for early education and child care providers in Pennsylvania. Workshops can be subsidized if funding is available, or arranged on a fee-for-service basis. To learn more about the procedure and which topics the state has approved to meet the STAR Level 2 Performance Standard for Health and Safety, click on the title above this text.     Five separate two hour interactive workshops are available individually or as a series.  The workshops highlight Caring for Our Children: National Health and Safety Standards. Content from the Caring for Our Children Video Series is used. Select from among the following topics:

  • WKSHP-Caring for the Caregiver
     Teaches early learning practitioners how to recognize and manage occupational health risks addressed in Caring for Our Children: the National Health and Safety Standards. Addresses management of stress, infectious disease risks and musculo-skeletal (ergonomic) challenges intrinsic to providing child care.
