For those who work in Pennsylvania, the self-learning modules meet STAR Level 2 Performance Standards for Health and Safety.  Most of the modules provide 2 hours of professional development credit.   • Self-Learning Modules: To Order Materials and Obtain Professional Development Credit
     ECELS offers self-learning modules for use and review for credit by ECELS-Healthy Child Care PA staff to Pennsylvania early learning and child care practitioners. Beginning July 1, 2010, ECELS requires a $10 per person co-pay for review of completed self-learning modules.  Payment is by check, payable to the PA Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. ECELS encourages use of online materials on this website by anyone who wants to improve care for children. The self-learning modules are listed below in the following order for each type of format: 1) Online learning materials 2) Online learning materials combined with hard-copy print and/or audiovisual materials and 3) hard-copy print materials only. Each self-learning module offers state-authorized Professional Development credit. Read the descriptions on this web page to learn about each self-learning module.Note many of the modules are approved to meet the STAR Level 2 Performance Standard for Health and Safety. Some require materials you must obtain from ECELS and some include A-V materials from ECELS that you can keep to use over and over again.   • Preventing and Managing Common Illnesses
    ECELS presented a two-part webinar series in fall 2011 on how to prevent and manage common illnesses in group are programs. The focus was on infectious diseases with a brief discussion of allergies and asthma. Excess illness makes it difficult for chldren to learn.   • SLM Online - Active Play (Safe Active Play)   [Available for Order]

    Learn how to keep your indoor and outdoor active play areas safe.  Uses Safe Active Play video/DVD and Dirty Dozen online activities to recognize hazards and a checklist based on current CPSC and ASTM guidelines to asses the areas where children play.  Submit completed module with the Registration Form and $10 per person fee for ECELS to review the work for professional development credit.      ECELS arranges on-site health and safety workshops for early education and child care providers in Pennsylvania. Workshops can be subsidized if funding is available, or arranged on a fee-for-service basis.   • WKSHP-Active Play (Safe Active Play)
     Highlights 12 most common active play hazards. Emphasizes the use of certified playground inspectors, facility checklists and injury reports to identify and remove significant hazards, and teaches how to maintain safe play areas.     Interactive discussion, visual aids and hands-on demonstrations to address the causes, symptoms, bodily responses, and current prevention and management for asthma episodes.   • WKSHP-Blood-borne Pathogens: Keeping Safe While Touching Blood or Other Body Fluids
    This workshop highlights special practices needed to protect staff and children from contact with blood or other potentially infectious body fluids. Learn how to minimize your risk of exposure to disease causing pathogens (germs, viruses, etc.) Learn how to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements. Explore your facility's policies and Exposure Control Plan. Discuss how to handle a biting incident. (ECERS-ITERS: Personal Care Routines, Parents and Staff.
