  • Active Play - Environmental Rating Scale Items
    This document prepared by Michelle Bossers, M.Ed - (Project Manager Keystone STARS Environmental Rating Scale Assessment) references the standards and describes the current measurement of compliance with national recommendations for safe, active play areas in the Keystone STARS program. The material was presented during an ECELS "Let's Talk" audioconference on Safe Active Play in August 2004. Note - for more information about Safe Active Play, see the ECELS self-learning module (SLM - Safe Active Play) listed in the Self-Learning Modules subsection of this Section.
  • Active Play Areas Safety Checklist (Brief)
    Elizabeth Hope Caesar developed this checklist for a Let's Talk audioconference held in September 2004. The checklist is based on the recommendations of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and the American Society for Testing and Materials Standards.  Ms. Caesar is an early education provider and an instructor for Certified Playground  Safety Inspectors.  Use this checklist to evaluate the safety of your playground.

  • Behavioral Data Collection Sheet
    A form that helps early education providers document for parents and health professionls observations of the child.  This documentation facilitates communication when there are concerns about a child's behavior.
  • Care Plan for a Child with Special Needs in Child Care

    When children with special needs are in group care, information should be shared by parents and the child’s primary health care provider (PCP) with those who care for him/her.  This Care Plan is used to communicate information to child care practitioners who are non-medical professionals. Child care practitioners should make sure they understand the information and obtain any training necessary.  Children with special needs will require the completion of the parts of this Care Plan that document their daily or emergency needs.  Additional information may be required for some children.  The supplemental forms referred to in the Care Plan can be found in the “Forms” section of the ECELS website.   • CY-47 Form: Report of Suspected Child Abuse

    PA Department of Public Welfare’s form for mandated reporters to document information about suspected child abuse and neglect.  Mandated reporters call ChildLine at 800/932-0313 to report suspected abuse and submit this completed form within 48 hours to the county children and youth agency.  For more information and professional development on child abuse and neglect, see the online ECELS Child Abuse and Neglect Self-Learning Module.  5/24/12

  • Emergency Information Form for Children with Special Health Care Needs
    This hyperlink is to a form that is posted on the website of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The form records health information for children with special health care needs. It can also be used to prepare for emergencies so that a child's medical history, medications, and treatments are accessible to emergency services personnel.

  • Child Care Health Advocate Course - Nutrition and Physical Activity
    With permission from the California Training Institute, Susan S. Aronson, MD updated the Child Care Health Advocate curriculum reading material in the Nutrition and Physical Activity module. The first edition module, dated 2006, is available online at www.ucsfchildcarehealth.org. The resulting updated chapter includes the content of the early released standards from the 3rd edition of Caring for Our Children. This updated chapter is required reading for the college credit-bearing Child Care Health Advocate Course now taught at Northampton Community College as an on-campus or online course. Reviewers were: Bobbie Rose, RN, Child Care Health Consultant for the California Childcare Health Program, and Kristen Copeland, MD, Cincinnati Children's Hospital for the material that cited her work.
  • Diapering Poster
    Download a fully Illustrated, up to date, tri-fold Diapering Poster. CCA Global created the poster with guidance from the staff of ECELS. The Delaware Valley Association for the Education of Young Children (DVAEYC) facilitated the arrangement. CCA Global is DVAEYC’s provider of shared services.  Reproduce and distribute the poster freely to child care professionals. Be sure to retain the citation and copyright. CCA Global gave permission for this free access. Nobody may sell the poster without permission from CCA Global. The poster demonstrates the procedure for safe and sanitary diapering. The source of the steps in the poster is Caring for Our Children, 3rd Edition, a publication of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Public Health Association, and the National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care and Early Education.

  • Health Capsule-Professional Development Online in PA from ECELS

    Is it difficult or costly to get to a workshop or have a workshop on site?   Are you interested in learning the latest information about health and safety?  ECELS-Healthy Child Care PA offers 22 topics online to help PA early education and child care providers earn professional development credit.  Anyone with access to the internet may use the self-learning modules. For those who work in Pennsylvania, the self-learning modules meet STAR Level 2 Performance Standards for Health and Safety.  Most of the modules provide 2 hours of professional development credit.   • Self-Learning Modules: To Order Materials and Obtain Professional Development Credit
     ECELS offers self-learning modules for use and review for credit by ECELS-Healthy Child Care PA staff to Pennsylvania early learning and child care practitioners. Beginning July 1, 2010, ECELS requires a $10 per person co-pay for review of completed self-learning modules.  Payment is by check, payable to the PA Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. ECELS encourages use of online materials on this website by anyone who wants to improve care for children. The self-learning modules are listed below in the following order for each type of format: 1) Online learning materials 2) Online learning materials combined with hard-copy print and/or audiovisual materials and 3) hard-copy print materials only. Each self-learning module offers state-authorized Professional Development credit. Read the descriptions on this web page to learn about each self-learning module.Note many of the modules are approved to meet the STAR Level 2 Performance Standard for Health and Safety. Some require materials you must obtain from ECELS and some include A-V materials from ECELS that you can keep to use over and over again.   • American Academy of Pediatrics
    The professional organization of pediatricians, pediatric medical and surgical specialists whose mission is to serve as advocates for children and pediatrics. View standards of child health supervision, including immunizations. Publications about common childhood illnesses, child development, behavior management and other problems may be purchased.The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also offers free handouts with useful tips on seasonally appropriate topics. Feel free to give out this information or include the information in your newsletters as long as you cite the AAP as the source.
  • California Child Care Health Program
    This regularly updated website includes health and safety obseration and policy checklists, lesson plans for health professionals to teach health and safety to early education and child care providers, fact sheets, posters and information packets, as well as content-rich newsletters for providers and health consultants.  The Asthma, Oral Health, and Lead Poisoning modules are rich resources. The module on asthma includes a downloadable video that is specific to management of this health problem in child care, as well as posters on triggers and handling asthma emergencies in the group care setting.  The state-specific references to California may not apply elsewhere, but are easy to identify in the materials.
  • Center for the Developing Child
    The mission of this Harvard-based center is to leverage scientific evidence to enhance child well-being. The center's website has a series of easily understood short videos and longer well-referenced policy papers. These tools have excellent graphics to explain how both positive and negative early influences on the young child affect the development of the child's brain and life-long health. The evidence discussed in the website materials clearly indicate the economic, social and community benefits of investment in quality experiences from the prenatal period onward.

     ECELS arranges on-site health and safety workshops for early education and child care providers in Pennsylvania. Workshops can be subsidized if funding is available, or arranged on a fee-for-service basis. To learn more about the procedure and which topics the state has approved to meet the STAR Level 2 Performance Standard for Health and Safety, click on the title above this text.     This workshop highlights special practices needed to protect staff and children from contact with blood or other potentially infectious body fluids. Learn how to minimize your risk of exposure to disease causing pathogens (germs, viruses, etc.) Learn how to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements.
