PA Promise for Children-Early Learning GPS-Guiding Parents Smoothly

Pennsylvania’s Promise for Children is a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of providing Pennsylvania’s young children with access to quality early learning opportunities. It is sponsored by the PA Build Initiative, Pennsylvania Early Learning Keys to Quality, The Grable Foundation, The Heinz Endowments, and William Penn Foundation, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL).

Early Learning GPS (Guiding Parents Smoothly) is an online tool that professionals can recommend to families with young children. The information on the website is a good way to start meaningful conversations with caregivers about how to help young children grow and develop well. The Early Learning GPS is an interactive quiz that helps think about how to foster life-long wellbeing for children.
• The child’s brain
• The child’s development
• Relationships between family members and children; and
• When the child is with people other than family members.

The GPS addresses the development of children, including nutrition, physical activity, visiting the doctor, and social-emotional health. After answering a question, families receive simple tips and links to reliable resources. More than 3,000 people have visited the GPS site since its launch in late January 2013. The site has excellent reviews.  Watch a 2 minute introduction to the GPS, access and view all the links at http://papromiseforchildren.com/help-your-child-grow/early-learning-gps/.
All of the content in the GPS has been vetted by child development staff at the Pennsylvania Office of Child Development and Early Learning and reviewed by 40 focus groups across the state. Updated 11/2013.
